John D. MacArthur Beach State Park was named in honor of John D. MacArthur whose Foundation gave a piece of the park’s land for construction in the 70s, is situated on and south of Singer Island, Florida in North Palm Beach, Florida. The park was opened by the general public on the year 1989. It is spread across 438 acres of land and underwater, including an Estuary that is crossed by a 1,600-foot long boardwalk as well as Munyon Island, a wilderness island in the Intracoastal Waterway that was home to the luxurious Hygeia Hotel in the early part of the Twentieth century. The hotel was destroyed to the ground in 1917. Pavilions and hiking trails are accessible to the public on Munyon Island, which is accessible only via kayak or by boat. One area in the park was called Air Force Beach from the early 1940s to the time of the park’s renaming because it was frequented by Palm Beach Air Force Base personnel. The bathing of naked people officially ended when the state took over the park in the year 1982. MacArthur Beach is a nesting area for sea turtles of a rare species as well as the threatened loggerhead, threatened green sea turtle, and sometimes that rare leatherback.
